How does Community Solar Benefit the Power Grid?

How does Community Solar Benefit the Power Grid?

Electricity is Everywhere

Have you ever stopped to wonder where your electricity comes from? Most people simply flick a switch and expect the lights to come on without thinking twice. Behind the scenes, a complex system is set up to create and distribute the electricity we use daily. Electricity powers the modern world. From the devices we use to communicate and the appliances we use to cook and clean, electricity is the lifeblood that keeps our homes and businesses running smoothly.

All electricity comes from somewhere, but not all electricity is created equal. In many parts of the world, fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas are still the most common ways of producing electricity. Unfortunately, some of the electricity we use daily contributes to air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions which accelerate climate change.

Despite the growing use of renewable energy like solar and wind power, we still have a long road to break free from fossil fuels.

This is why Community Solar programs exist in so many states - Community Solar is a simple but powerful solution to the problem of dirty electricity. By allowing communities to come together and support solar energy, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and encourage the transition to a clean energy future.

‍

Where does Energy Come From?

While fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas have been used for many years to generate electricity, they're also responsible for many environmental problems, including air and water pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change.

Air Pollution

Burning fossil fuels releases pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter into the air. These pollutants can cause respiratory problems like asthma and contribute to smog and acid rain.

Water Pollution

Mining, transporting, and burning fossil fuels can also lead to water pollution. Oil spills and leaks from pipelines and oil rigs can contaminate water sources, and coal mining can release toxic chemicals like arsenic and mercury into nearby waterways.

Habitat Destruction

Extracting fossil fuels can also destroy habitat, as forests and other natural areas are cleared to make way for drilling rigs, pipelines, and other infrastructure.

Climate Change

Perhaps the most significant problem associated with fossil fuel-generated electricity is climate change. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to rising global temperatures, sea level rise, and extreme weather events.

‍

Why Community Solar?

What can we do to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels? By supporting clean energy sources like solar power, we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and help mitigate environmental dangers.

Community Solar allows communities to support clean, renewable energy and save, reducing the need for electricity generated from fossil fuels. Not only does this help to protect the environment, but it also reduces the risk of power outages and other disruptions to the grid.
