How Do Solar Panels Work?

Why Solar Energy?

Solar panels have recently gained popularity as a clean and renewable energy solution. This blog intends to discuss the benefits of solar panels, describe how they work, and how they power Sunscription's Community Solar Gardens. In this blog, we'll explore the pros and cons of solar panels and how we create clean energy with Community Solar.

How Solar Panels Work:

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic panels, harness the power of sunlight and convert it into usable electricity through a process called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. When sunlight strikes the solar cells within the panel, it stimulates the release of electrons, generating a direct current (DC) flow of electricity. Solar cells are made up of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, that help facilitate the PV effect.

Solar panel systems have several components which work together synchronously. An inverter is required to convert the DC electricity produced by the solar panels into alternating current (AC), the standard form of electricity used in homes and businesses. The electricity is fed from the Solar Garden into the local electrical grid and used directly to power appliances and devices.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Energy:

One of the benefits of Solar Gardens (also known as Solar Farms) as well as rooftop solar systems is their ability to connect to the existing electrical grid and reduce the need to produce energy using fossil fuels.  Solar energy is a clean and renewable energy source that can save homes and businesses money. By joining Community Solar programs or directly purchasing a rooftop solar system, individuals help reduce greenhouse gas emissions for their community and help fight climate change.  

However, installation costs for rooftop solar energy can be a significant hurdle for some people, and incentives for rooftop solar systems can exclude renters from supporting clean energy. Community Solar has gained popularity in many states to enable clean energy support through economies of scale.
